The Three Main Categories Of Martial Arts Oklahoma City Ok

By Susan Martin

While fighting styles have always been very popular due to competitions, MMA, and wrestling, they actually have a long and bloody history. Back in the time before there were projectile weapons, people had to fight using their fists, feet, and close combat weapons. From there, modern martial arts Oklahoma City Ok branched out into three main categories based on the technical aspects and their move set.

When one would watch those action movies that involved hand to hand fighting, the most common type of moves would be the punches and the kicks since these moves are the easiest to use when taking down an opponent. Aside from punches and kicks, some other moves involve headbutts, knees, elbows, and chops.

Some of the striking combat styles include muay thai, boxing, taekwondo, karate, wu shu, wing chun, tai chi, savate, and capoeira. Some of these styles may also incorporate some form of grappling or takedown such as wing chun and tai chi. However, they are primarily striking forms that aim to crush or knock out opponents.

The second type of combat style would be the wrestling or grappling moves. Now, the move set of these styles are a little different because they involve taking down the opponent and catching him or her in a lock such as an armbar or a triangle choke. Styles that involve grappling and locks are jiu jitsu, xan da, judo, and aikido.

If one would observe most MMA fights these days, one will see that wrestling has a distinct advantage over striking when it comes to ground fighting. As wrestlers are more specialized with taking opponents to the ground than strikers, strikers hardly stand a chance when they are already taken down. In modern times, strikers noticed this flaw and created a move known as the sprawl to avoid being held down on the floor.

The last category would be the armed arts which involved a lot of weaponry. These ones were the ones that were taught to the warriors and the soldiers during the warring periods. These arts made use of weapons such as staffs, swords, halberds, shields, sticks, chains, nunchucks and more.

Some of the combat forms that primarily made use of weapons include various kung fu styles, kenjutsu, eskrima, fencing, or Indian gatka. These ones, although have hand to hand application, emphasize more on weapon movement. The hand to hand application would be similar to the armed movements since the principle behind armed arts is that the weapon is just an extension of the body.

If ever one would want to take up a combat style, then these are the options that he or she has for choices. Now, if one were to ask which style is the best one, the answer would depend on the preference and personal body style of the user. There are some arts that are more suited for some types of people while there are some suited for other types. Always remember that each style has its own strength and weakness so one should go for the art that suits him or her the most.
